We birded from Whitewood to Northeast of Spearfish and backroads to Belle Fourche reservoir this morning with limited sightings. Raptors included Swainson's Hawks, Prairie Falcon, and American Kestrel. Other sightings of interest included Turkey Vultures, Easter/Western Kingbirds, Barn Swallows, Lark Bunting, and Vesper-Lark-Chipping Sparrows. Most roadside ponds are dry, and the Belle Fourche Reservoir is only 40% full with large shorelines and few birds.
At our feeders 1.5 miles south of Whitewood, we have kept our jelly and hummingbird feeders filled and were rewarded this morning with a Rufous Hummingbird, Western Tanager, and on the ground a Brown Thrasher and a pair of juvenile American Robins along with a lot of resident birds.
