Busy day on the observatory today with many personal interactions and visitors excited for the regular season arrival. Observers were tempted up by the weather conditions today. Thank you Tom M., Tom D., and Chuck for sharing part of your day with me and keeping me company. A face from the far past, just not my past, visited the hawk watch today. Chris Newton and Tricia Newton from Florida introduced themselves to me today. It would seem that we just missed each other 15 years ago when he moved away and I began visiting. It is great to witness the timeline of this project through the years. Chris wants to send greetings to all he once spent time with. New visitors but frequent participants at Wachusett gave Pack a try today. A nice welcome to Reeves Briggs and Karla Briggs.
Weather: The day felt like more typical August weather on the summit today. A 62 F opening hour quickly jumped ten degrees F in the first hour. Temperatures topped out at 80 F with light NW winds all day. Mount Washington made a rare August appearance but haze and low clouds quickly obscured it. Lafayette was within our visibility all day.
Raptor Observations: The 16 total migrants today exceeded our total of the previous 2 days. However, the bird of the day was not a migrant. An adult male peregrine falcon showed up at the end of the 3 PM DST hour. Playing with a raven giving great close looks.
Butterflies: American White Admiral, American Fritillary, American Lady
Predictions: Changeable weather and a chance of showers the next couple of days.
