The first Pectoral Sandpiper of the season, a juvenile, was present for a while at the upper, east end of Lower Otay Lake on the extensive mud flats that are here, but lots of shorebirds departed or at least were seriously moved around by helicopters overhead and I can't refind it at the moment. It was generally hanging out by itself. Not to panic, however, as this is just the beginning of the next six or more weeks of Pectoral season. This is perhaps a few days early. There is also a new Solitary Sandpiper here, generally hanging out on the far side of the mud flat area. Be very careful birding this spot as one needs to park and be standing on the side of a busy road. A good scope is essential, as is likely coming either early or late in the day when there's little or no heat distortion. Still 14 juvenile Short billed dowitchers here and several Semi plovers. A reasonable number of westerns and leasts.
