At Central Park in Manhattan, NY. City on Monday, Aug. 24th, a minimum of 17 migrant warbler species were ongoing. Away from Central, a half-dozen or more Lesser Yellowlegs have been showing including at the flats of Sherman Creek Park as well as sightings from off Inwood Hill Parks n. side. Up to 6 additional shorebird species were also seen from northern Manhattan, while Central Park still held Solitary Sandpipers, in addition to regularly-noticed Spotted Sandpipers. Off the area of west Greenwich Village at pier 57 on the Hudson River, a Forsters Tern was noticed - J. Suzuki. Other terns, besides the most-regular Common Terns of summer in this county, may be passing thru on migration, worth close watches.
Later afternoon observers of the ongoing single Lesser-legs at the Central Park reservoir on Monday saw a Bald Eagle come along and swing down to sit on the same berm not so far from that yellowlegs, and yet this did not flush the Yellowlegs. Gulls, however, certainly reacted with fear to the Eagle arrival. Incidentally, Green-winged Teal continued at the C.P. Reservoir Monday, and N. Shoveler was still showing at Central Park.
A strong departure of migrants has occurred thru Monday night into early Tuesday, with many migrants appearing to over-fly the NYC area, some making distances of multiple hundreds of miles south, on their nocturnal journeys. In any event there may well be new arrivals for Tuesday.
