In some past years, we have had a Lesser Nighthawk at LLC in August, so I decided to give it a shot. No luck on that one today, but nevertheless it was a pleasant experience to get there at 5:30 a.m. and watch the sky gradually lighten and hear the birds wake up.
First birds I detected were a pair of Black-crowned Night-herons the flew in overhead and foraged around the perimeter of the lake near the dam. Then I noticed a large bump on the raining along the dam that turned out to be a Great Horned Owl. It dropped down to the ground a couple of times but I didn't see it catch anything. Eventually as the sky lightened, it flew across the Lake into a eucalyptus tree on the far side and disappeared.
Overall the birding was not remarkable. Bird activity around Stow House was very low but I did find both a Yellow Warbler and a Wilson's Warbler in the tipu tree next to the caretaker's house. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful place to be early today.
