This morning I conducted a seawatch at BEAN HOLLOW STATE BEACH , 8:00-10:00. Ocean was calm with no breeze and heavy overcast.Humpback Whales were feeding a mile or so offshore.Very little diversity, but relatively high numbers of shearwaters and jaegers.Northbound SOOTY SHEARWATERS averaged 300-per-minute, resulting in a total of 36,000 individuals.Among them were PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS,with 13 birds observed.I saw at least 14 JAEGERS, 10 of which were POMARINE.An OSPREY was flying in from offshore carrying a fish and being pursued by gulls.A PEREGRINE heading offshore may have been hunting phalaropes.
Surprising was a LEAST TERN flying north just beyond the beach. Although small numbers of this species are seen at SM County bayland locations at times, coastal records are very few.
