Sailing back north yesterday I spotted a lone bird sitting on the water. At first I thought it was a Laughing Gull as they are beginning to congregate in the bay. However, as we got closer I realized it was all wrong for a gull. We passed within 10-15 ft of it (it never moved away) and I realized it was a Thick-billed Murre. In August. We were just off West Falmouth I believe, but far enough away from shore that I'm not sure it would have been visible to anyone on land.
