There is a path on the west side of Callen’s Restaurant. Park in the state park parking lot across the street and use your Discover card. Most birders walk that path to its end. It gives you somewhat closer viewing of the pelicans. Crockett Lake has been an Island County bird magnet seemingly forever. Private property has been problematic there as recreationists began launching sailboards and other craft into the lake, thereby disturbing the birds that use it for nesting or migration stopovers. Whidbey Camano Land Trust bought up as much as they could to protect the lake and the birds that use it. Get a good, powerful scope and view from a distance.
Can one get IN to wander around on the shores of Crockett Lake or paddle the pond? Or is it not very approachable terrain (in addition to being at least partially private property)? I was interested recently in seeing if I could get a closer view of the pelicans than is available from the south, but there's no access from the north, apparently, and I'm not sure if you can practically walk in from the other directions.
