Tweets - It was a pleasant day at the park, but very quiet and almost birdless. Many misses. Still not a waste of time, though.
Highlights: Four woodpecker day - Missing sapsuckers, and only Pileated and Flicker actually seen Purple Martin - Heard a couple, the only swallow species we were able to be sure of. A couple of sightings of swallow spp. Swainson's Thrush - Matt heard some pre-dawn; none for the rest of us RED CROSBILL - Flyover of six, and later Matt & I had one calling near the mansion. First of Year (FOY), and first in just over a year, for the survey Black-throated Gray Warbler - Again a small flock in the Oregon Ash tree, seen from near the SW Dog Meadow bench area Western Tanager - One or two heard, one glimpsed American Beaver - One with the crew shells, from the Lake Platform Muskrat - One along the slough, just south of the Dog Area Raccoon - One on the far side of the slough opposite the heronry, our 2nd sighting of the year
Misses were numerous: Hooded Merganser, Band-tailed Pigeon, Vaux's Swift, Spotted Sandpiper, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Barn Swallow (Matt might have seen one), Bushtit, Savannah Sparrow, and Wilson's Warbler have all been seen in at least half of previous years for Week 33, but not today.
We managed only 49 species. For the year, adding the crossbills, we're at 117 for survey in 2026.
