I live about a mile above the lake. The colony you’re referring to is
probably the one that is located at the southernmost end of the old piling
line that crosses the lake. As you drive along the spit heading East it is
on your left. There is also a gourd colony near Callans.
Every year, a pair or two manages to nest on the ferry structure itself.
Usually they find a place among the black rubber bumper on the extreme
south end. They were scolding me as I launched my boat at the ramp a few
weeks ago.
For years a pair or two managed to nest in the old pier at the south end of
the protected area immediately in front of the volunteer trailer and
restroom. Any boxes placed on that Pier would be immediately occupied, as
would any boxes placed on the ferry structure, WSF permitting, of course.
I usually have several pairs occupying my Kestrel and swallow boxes up by
my house. This season, though, they were absent.
