I made a short stop at Devereux Slough this morning. I didn't See the continuing Neotropic Cormorant, but I met David Blue at the half-bridge and he said he'd had it earlier perched in the tree where the cormorants often roost.
I concentrated on the small group of Sandpipers that were feeding just north of the bridge parking spot. Again, just Western and Least Sandpipers made up the mix, though I found a Spotted Sandpiper along the near edge of the Channel as well. I had an Osprey circling overhead for a few minutes--the first one I've seen at this location in a while.
One of the Least Sandpipers was very odd-looking. It had a large white patch on the Primaries or wing coverts on one side. In addition, it was also larger than any of the other Least Sandpipers in the group. However, the rest of its coloration and the small, delicate shape of its bill certainly looked like Least. (A "Greater Least"?) We compared it with other possible Shorebirds and ruled out both Bairds and Pectoral for many reasons. I think David got a photo of this bird and I showed it to the Levasheffs and Jeff Hanson as well.
Shorebirds are fun sometimes . . .
