Nebraska birders,
According to the Peterson Guide to Western Birds, Chipping Sparrows have a
gray rump and Clay-colored have brown rump. According to Birds of Nebraska
online, Clay-colored Sparrows begin to show up in Nebraska August 16
so it's a little too early for them. I always have trouble identifying
sparrows in the fall. I remember when NOU fall meetings were in Halsey.
We saw so many sparrows that were immature or adults in winter plumage. It
was frustrating but we learned a lot.
