I was baiting my moth traps tonight and find a juvenile red headed woodpecker in one. I know they love moths and found a feather in another a while back. Wonder if parents teach them about the easy meal or is it learned behavior. I unzip trap and he or she flies away. I do catch some butterflies too. Interestingly the birds eat all the bait during the day.
FYI. Some moths and butterflies do not nectar. They like rotting fruit. My bait is dark beer. Brown sugar, and banana or watermelon.
I've not seen any other woodpeckers at the traps... Just red headed. Very interesting I think.
Oh. This is sanborn county. Union township if you want something more exact.
