Tweets - The Air Quality Index was probably nearly 150 this morning at Marymoor. Early on, we were trying to see through dense low-lying smog. Birds were quiet and scarce. There really only seemed to be one hotspot for birds in the park.
Highlights: Vaux's Swift - Approaching 20 in total, including a dozen or more immediately west of the Rowing Club parking lot. High count for the year Spotted Sandpiper - One at Dog Central; only our 4th sighting of the year LEAST SANDPIPER - Matt heard several flying past the Lake Platform pre-dawn. First of Year (FOY) Pied-billed Grebe - One from the Lake Platform, inly our 3rd since May Green Heron - Three (both adult and juvie) at the Rowing Club pond. Outnumbered Great Blue Herons by one for the day Hairy Woodpecker - Two near the east end of the boardwalk were only our 2nd since early June Brown-headed Cowbird - Juveniles being attended to by COMMON YELLOWTHROATS and by WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS Black-throated Gray Warbler - Mini-flock of ~6 along the west edge of the Dog Meadow Western Tanager - One near the BTYWs Lazuli Bunting - One male and 1-2 juveniles/females, East Meadow. We've only ever had three later sightings
Today's hotspot was looking west from the bench along the west edge of the Dog Area at the NW corner of the southern triangle. This is often a really good spot, so much so that we visit it twice each survey. Today's birds there, in part: ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD, OSPREY (flyby), WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, WESTERN WARBLING VIREO, STELLER'S JAY, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, BUSHTIT, AMERICAN ROBIN, many PURPLE FINCH, BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, NORTHERN YELLOW WARBLER, the 6 BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS, WESTERN TANAGER, and BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK. Probably crows and other incidentals too. Would have been a pretty notable Stationary checklist on eBird.
I've never come up with a name for this spot; I think I'll refer to it now as the SW Dog Meadow Bench. Coordinates are 47.656099, -122.112188, as best I can figure.
Misses today included American Barn Owl, Violet-green Swallow, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Marsh Wren, and Red-winged Blackbird.
For the day, 54 species. For 2026, adding LEAST SANDPIPER, the survey is now at 116 species.
