Subject: [SFBirds] A bit more on the banded Snowy Plover
Hi all,
I reported a few days ago on a color-banded Snowy Plover photographed at
Ocean Beach. Earlier this year, the bird was in Humboldt County. I reached
out to Stephanie Stragier, a Cal Poly Humboldt grad student doing research
up there and learned that this bird had two successful nesting attempts at
a site near the South Jetty, at the entrance to Humboldt Bay. She was last
seen there on July 25, five days before I encountered her at Ocean Beach.
Given shorebird flight speeds in the 25-35 mph range, it's plausible that
she might have made this flight in one night, or perhaps made a stopover in
between.
Stephanie will be presenting about her research at the Western Field
Ornithologists annual conference in Ashland, Oregon, September 17-20.
