The number of shorebirds overall was down this morning, for no apparent reason that I could see. For example, I counted79 Black-bellied Plovers today and they were widely scattered all along the beach; the same for Long-billed Curlews (76). I picked up no new species for the season, but 2 Black Turnstones were present on the Ellwood portion of the beach. Nice to see after missing them yesterday.
I checked the Slough mouth area to see if I could pick up the Neotropic Cormorant Nick found yesterday, but there were no Cormorants present in that portion of the Slough. After I finished my beach walk, I checked Devereux from Slough Road. There were about a dozen Double-crested Cormorants there, but none looked small enough to be a Neotropic Cormorant. A small group of juvenile Western Sandpipers was still foraging in approximately the same area where I had them yesterday.
