Mount Zion Hawk Watch at Windy Saddle Park

EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO THE HAWK WATCH TO ENJOY THE SPECTACLE OF RAPTOR MIGRATION, EVEN IF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IDENTIFYING RAPTORS IN FLIGHT. We will help you to learn Raptor ID.

To get to the site which is along Lookout Mountain Rd. in Golden, enter either Windy Saddle Park or Mount Zion into Google Maps on your favorite navigation app, or enter the coordinates 39.7368,-105.2454. From the parking lot ascend the stone steps to the watch site.

A hiker was interested in what we were doing.
Weather:
Miserably hot with very light winds from the East, cloudless.Smoke from
wildfires still persists reducing visibility, so Denver 15 miles away could
barely be seen.
Raptor Observations:
The first local TV was aloft at 9:21 a.m., while a group of three migrant
RT went through at 10:10 a.m. DST.
Non-raptor Observations:
Violet-green swallow 2, Common Nighthawk 1, Common Raven 1, Broad-tailed
Hummingbird 1.
Two paragliders at 10:25 a.m., one of which had two people one behind the
other. They take off somewhere below us along the NE slope of Mount Zion,
and neither had much lift, not getting above our level.
Predictions:
A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 pm, increasing clouds and
hot, with a high near 99. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming northeast in the
afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is
30%.
