I second vortex but would lean towards the 8x, a bit more user friendly and plenty to ID most birds

Hi Paul. I love my vortex diamondback 10*42 and they were about $200 so pretty great price. Broke them once and vortex fixed them quickly for free. They have some stability and allow pretty great views of small passerines flitting up in the trees, etc. They were my beginning pair and I still use them basically daily (though finally thinking about upgrading now after several years of using them!)
