I was just watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qvYCbvbeN8 and
the chick was
moving a large stick on the nest (practising for later in life?). It got
me to think about other
times I've seen video of nest building by hawks, osprey, and eagles ...
and it occurred to me
that "they really don't do that task very purposefully" when I compared
what this Osprey
soon to fledge bird was doing -vs- what I've seen in the past.
Yes, there is a purpose (nest building) - but it is my impression
that they sort of 'move
stuff around' much more than 'pick up a stick and place it where they
want it'. I will go so
far as to speculate ... "maybe they don't really have the eyesight for
this task" (seeing
both ends of the stick and maneuvering it to place it precisely).
If you watch beaver building a dam they are -very- precise about
placement compared
to what avian nest building I've seen.
What are your thoughts on this sticky subject?
I went to Reifel this week. Pretty unbirdy - well LOTS of Mallards
and Canada Geese and not a
lot else (a fair number of Blue-winged Teal). I arrived about 11:30 and
left about 2.
I'm hoping to get in at least one more Puffin trip to Smith Island
soon. - Jim
