Subject: Re: Atlantic Seaboard Ospreys in Trouble, Guy McCaskie Memorial, Young Birder Program Registration, and More!
Thank you, Kathleen, for sharing the osprey article on the listserv. It is
well worth reading.

My attention was also drawn to Ted Floyd's tribute to Guy McCaskie. It
seems we have had more than the usual number of *in memoriam *pieces for
birders recently.

Floyd noted that everyone who spent time with him came away with a Guy
McCaskie story.

My first time with him was 30 years ago, brief, and at the time, I didn't
know who he was, but I still have a story.

I was standing with my scope surveying the San Diego River estuary across
from Robb Field when from behind came a deep voice, "Whatcha seein'?"
"Elegant Terns,'' I answered, with my face still in the scope
.
"Not here!" was the authoritative response.

I stepped back from the scope and pointed, "Those two, flying just over
there."

He followed my point and brought up his binoculars, followed by "Hummph,
they weren't here yesterday."

Perhaps it was as a reward for my sighting, I'll never know, but without
prompting, he gave me very clear directions, to a White Wagtail being seen
up in Orange County. I thanked him. He walked away. I found the wagtail
the next day, without knowing who the man was.

A year later, almost to the day, I was back at the estuary, face in the
scope, when from behind came, "Watcha seein' out there?" There were no
Elegant Terns that day, but I rattled off a half dozen species. He
countered with, "What about those x's there, and the y over there?" "Oh,"
I mumbled, seeing them for the first time, "thanks for pointing them out.
I followed your directions and saw the Wagtail last year. Thank you"

I knew this was probably my only chance to learn who the fellow was, so I
added, "I'm Edge Wade, from Missouri. I don't get here often, but it is a
favorite place for me."

"Guy McCaskie," he said, as he extended his hand, then ambled on down the
bike path.
