This morning I attended a tour of Kitt Peak observatory with the local chapter of the Society of American Foresters. (I retired from the Forest Service) Arriving at 9AM, there were hundreds of Wandering Glider dragonflies in the air…. They attracted a flock of swifts…. But to my surprise, out of 10-12 hawking about, only one was a White-throated Swift…. The rest were Black Swifts….. big Black Swifts. They moved on before I could get any photos but several of our group saw them.
Field marks I observed in the two or three minutes: All black, notably forked tail, larger than the single White-throated Swift.
It was one of those amazing moments that could have been easily been missed.
