Getting out to bird is awesome. Posting something to eBird can be great and inform others of great finds. And then....there are those who are unaware of reality, do not take into context their surroundings, or bother to know what is or is not living at the zoo you are visiting. Such is the recent post on eBird Rare Bird Alert for Pierce County. A Trumpeter Swan was reported at the lake on the grounds of Northwest Trek Zoological Park. The poster says: it was on the lake and open to the sky (meaning no cage or confinement). Thus, they concluded it must be wild, free flying and happened to land at the zoo in the middle of summer. Awareness of the situation was clearly not happening here. As many of you are aware, NW Trek does have a captive Trumpeter Swan, female. A single bird who has been with them for many, many years. She is pinioned. NWT is not going to get her a mate as they do not want cygnets and there is no guarantee that she would accept another female as a friend. Thus, a solo and she is doing quite well. Keep looking out there, you never know what you will find....just bird with awareness as the vast majority of people do and enjoy the summer that is left to us.
