I checked both Goleta Beach and Devereux this morning, spending considerable time scanning the individuals at both locations through my scope. There is an individual at Goleta Beach with a rather unusual shape of its gular pouch, but overall size and other characteristics do not indicate a Neo.
The estuary channel at Goleta Beach is extremely full, with water coming well up the banks of the channel. The entrance outfall is securely blocked and it will take human intervention to open it up. Until then, the habitat is lousy for shorebirds. I found only a single Spotted Sandpiper on its shore this morning.
At Devereux, there was a nice mixed flock of small shorebirds feeding upstream of the broken bridge: Semi-palmated plovers, Western Sandpipers, a couple of Least Sandpipers, 2 Dowitchers, and a Kildeer.
