I checked out Area K this morning and found the east end most productive. Shorebirds are definitely gathering here as the water levels drop and the Egret population is loving it. Best find this morning was a single Lesser Yellowlegs in with the Greaters (at least 10). Also present were at least 10 Dowitchers (silent), 18 Black-necked Stilts, and a single Sandpiper that stayed behind just enough grass to be unidentifiable. I counted 47 Snowy Egrets and 23 Great Egrets as well. I expect the numbers to increase in the days ahead.
Best viewing of this area is probably evening as the light will be behind the observer, not behind the birds as it was this morning. I'd avoid daytime on weekdays because of the hectic construction in the vicinity.
Moving on to Devereux, I found 1 continuing Wilson's Phalarope 27 Western Sandpipers, and 1 Least Sandpiper, along with the usual Herons and Double-crested Cormorants. No sign of a Neotropic Cormorant--I did not check Goleta Beach for the latter species
