Hi Folks:
Just for planning purposes on your birding ventures, Whitewater Draw has
received some water from recent rains. It is not a major flood, but has
put some extensive shallow water into the playa adjacent to the main dike.
It is muddy water carrying 'first flush' crud from upstream, and hasn't had
time to start growing many food items for birds, but it is the largest body
of water for miles. I didn't have all that much on the 23rd, but there was
a flock of Baird's Sandpipers flying around, I heard a Solitary Sandpiper,
etc. I would not recommend anyone driving all that far just to bird this
spot right now, but it is not that far out of the way for the many birders
traveling between the Huachuca Mtns. and the Chiricahua Mtns., e.g., Bisbee
through Double Adobe and north, or Charleston Road and West Davis road, and
south. It will get better, especially if there is more heavy rain. The
pipe into the central pond is open, and water from the playa had flooded
into all of it as well. There are a couple of good patches of seeding
grass in flooded areas. Telescope useful; much vegetation in the flooded
part of the playa.
