My name is Nora Carlson and I am behavioral ecologist – I study animal
behavior in the wild. I am currently working at the University of Tokyo
studying how birds talk to one another about predators and the danger they
pose. I have been fascinated with animal communication since I first did a
research course studying killer whales in the Salish Sea. Since my
undergraduate, I have been most interested by a behavior called mobbing – a
behavior where prey will harass and attack predators and often talk to one
another about how dangerous the predator is. One of the reasons I love
animal communication so much is that it encourages me to try and
see/understand the world from the perspective of other species with
different ways of sensing the world (e.g., most birds hear faster than we
do which is why we have to use images to study bird calls rather than our
own hearing).
I am planning to conduct some experiments in Kitsap County (centered around
Bainbridge Island) and Southwest Snohomish County (centered around Lynwood)
and possibly around Bellingham this winter, and I am hoping to find some
people interested in letting me use their bird feeders to conduct my
experiments (playing sounds to birds to see how they respond) as well as
some local knowledge about the best places to find chickadees reliably in
winter (Nov – Mar).
