Hello Birders,
This morning six locals and 2 birders from Norway tallied 38 species during an abbreviated walk along the trails at the San Pedro House. Frequent rains during the last couple of weeks have resulted in sustained heavy flow along the San Pedro River flooding the river trail and access routes to Black Phoebe and Kingfisher Ponds. The circuit birded this morning was limited to Del Valle Road, the road along the north side of Garden Wash and the upper trail along the river.
For the first time this year the air was filled with the calls of Botteri's and Cassin's Sparrows as we walked along Del Valle Road. Highlights along the road included prolonged views of perched Cassin's Sparrow, Varied Bunting and Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet. We heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling from the mesquites along Garden Wash, but were unable to get a look at it. As we headed back to the house from the river we watched a kettle of 12 Lesser Nighthawks flying along the tops of the cottonwoods along the river.
The Friends of the San Pedro River leads birding walks the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. For the month of August, the walks leave at 6:00a from the BLM’s San Pedro House south of State Route 90 just west of the San Pedro River. We walk about 2 to 3 miles and are out for about three hours. Bring your own binoculars, a hat and water.
