Yesterday afternoon Steven Nares reported a dark and light booby standing on a rock near the end of Zuniga Jetty at the mouth of San Diego Bay as he transited in and out of the bay on a fishing boat. Several of us went to the visitor center area at Cabrillo National Monument In the late afternoon and scoped the bird from great distance. Views are awful. It has been hanging out not quite at the end of the jetty next to a group of cormorants, under one of the warning signs. Steven reports that the bird is back again today, Tuesday. It's a young bird that will be very difficult to separate between the two species, and certainly one's views from Cabrillo at best show that it is one of those two. It has a warm dark brown head and back and is very white underneath. Steven also was able to get mediocre photos of what looks like a likely Manx Shearwater about 3 mi off Point Loma today.
