Last night I birded the west Los Capitancillos Ponds from 6:30-7:30. On
the first pond west of Meridian was a Ruddy Duck family with three
ducklings plus another male. (distant photo attached)
I was looking for Vaux's Swifts and saw twenty plus, fewer than
expected. Their numbers will continue to grow into September when they
migrate. White throated Swifts, Tree Swallows and Nor. Rough winged
Swallows were in with the swifts, sometimes feeding low over the middle
ponds.
Also seen were three Green Heron, two Great Blue Heron, a dozen Great
tailed Grackle, many Am. Coots with young and a few Pied billed Grebe
families. Thirty species total.
Neighbors Coopers Hawks fledged on July 3rd and three young are hanging
around our yard. This tree squirrel was a prize one day last week. (see
photo) One fledgling perched on our deck and just watched a ground
squirrel yesterday. I'm hoping their presence will keep it away.
The Pygmy Nuthatch pair was seen in our yard today and last week I found
a pair in Greystone Park.
