Thank you, Everyone, for your replies.
I did see both an adult junco and a California towhee (age indeterminate)
under the tree where the sound seemed to emanate from. It's certainly loud
enough to be either of those!
The juvenile towhee hopping around with an adult squawked once but didn't
chirp.
Bonus: though I never saw the adults, four fledgling Western bluebirds have
been frequenting our birdbaths and garden. A photos is
attached.
