I would echo this I've been using the 3-legged thing "Lance" monopod with foot for around 6 month. Much better (taller) than an older Manfroto. Height is essential for flying birds.
The Wimberley MH-100 mono gimbal head, works well.
For hiking (mobile work) the compromise in stability between a monopod and tripod is acceptable to me.
My usage is with a 200-500 F5.6 zoom and 500 MM PF WITH 1.4 TC.
