I've been using a Bogen 3218 with a 482 head for many years and love it. Fully extended, it raises my scope eyepiece to almost 70 inches, an inch or so more than I need. It's quick to deploy and very sturdy -- no wiggle or wobble. With scope and shoulder strap, total weight is about 4 pounds.
I don't believe it came with a strap. I've used a couple of different luggage straps that have worked well. It's so light a shoulder pad isn't necessary.
A monopod can't be as stable as a tripod and I have sometimes wished for greater stability. Seawatching on a gusty day can be a real challenge. I try to find a seat, shorten the monopod, and pretend I'm a rock.
It's also nearly impossible to share the view.
All in all, your assessment is correct: You need to own a monopod.

I need to own a monopod. Does anybody here have experience they are willing to share.
