Thanks Rick.  So the birds were "sunning" but we are still not sure to what evolutionary-directed purpose - certainly not to warm up or get a tan.  At least we have a name for the behavior!

It is not just about names and lists.  I encourage people to post photos or other evidence of bird behavior.  What were these bank swallows near Valentine doing this morning?  They lean over on their side with their wings out to their sides on a bright, hot slope in the middle of their nesting colony.  Is the UV and/or heat ridding them of lice or other parasites?
