I learned the sad news of Guy Tudor's passing today from Patricia Lindsay while I was out twitching some of the great birds currently at Jones Beach.
I have very fond memories of Guy. As much as I enjoyed the outstanding lectures and photographs at the Butterfly Club meetings in Queens, I'd be lying if I said Guy wasn't one of the main reasons I looked forward to going. The way he ran those meetings was often like something straight out of a Seinfeld episode. Watching him bang the gavel with a cigarette in hand to bring everyone back to order was always a highlight.
There was nothing pretentious about Guy, and I admired him for that. He was genuine, funny, and unforgettable. Beyond the Butterfly Club, his extraordinary artwork in The Birds of South America and other classic field guides inspired countless birders and naturalists around the world.
We have lost another brilliant soul. May his memory live on.

I learned this morning that Guy Tudor has passed away. Guy was an accomplished bird artist and naturalist. Among other things, he was a MacArthur Genius award winner, first president and host of the New York City Butterfly Club, and co-author with Rick Cech of the “Butterflies of the East Coast” book.
