Nebraska birders,
It has been hot but I did a bit of birding in the morning on July 12 in Adams County near Hastings. On Google maps, I saw Willow Lake Fish Hatchery northwest of Hastings. I had never heard of a fish hatchery near Hastings so I was curious. I drove to the place at the intersection of county roads 70 and N Highland. I saw raised banks along the roads like impoundments but I couldn't see over the top. I don't think that there's water in them. It looks like the place has been abandoned. At the north end of the property, there's an old sign that says "Willow Lake Fish Hatchery" and right beside it is a "No Trespassing" sign. I ebirded from the county roads and saw or heard eleven species. Nothing unusual.
I revisited a flood control wetland that I drove by the last time I was in Adams County. It's located on Marion Road between 26th and 42nd Roads. I parked and walked along the road. It's a nice wetland that's worth checking once in a while. I submitted an ebird list with eighteen species. I needed to add details for the Swainson's Hawk, Wood Ducks and American Coot. Not far from there, I saw a large flock of about eighty Mourning Doves.
The weather was getting too warm for me so I headed for Prairie Lake Recreation Area southwest of Hastings. I parked in the shade and submitted an ebird list including seventeen species. There was nothing unusual but it was good to be out birding.
