We birded Whitewood Valley to Orman and return on Friday 7.10.26. Temperatures climbed to 97 F and birding was poor. All of the small roadside ponds were dry and Belle Fourche reservoir (Orman Dam) was lower because of irrigation waters pouring outbound into the canals and. Raptor sightings included 4 Red-tailed Hawks and one Prairie Falcon. Other sightings of interest were Eastern and Western Kingbirds, Says Phoebe, a flock of Gray Partridge. and one Grasshopper Sparrow. Our "bird of the day" was 25 or more Upland Sandpipers along Weisman Road from WW Valley to SD 34. Attached is a picture of one of the Sandpipers.
Our feeders 1.5 miles south of Whitewood continue to have lots if birds. Species of note include Bullock's Oriole, Indigo and Lazuli Buntings, and Western Tanager . Last week we had five Common Nighthawks in the evening.
