Subject: [sd-birds] SFBC field trip results
Today a dozen birders joined the monthly field trip of the Sioux Falls Bird Club. We began with a quick stint in the southeast part of Sioux Falls to look for Mississippi Kites or Broad-winged Hawks that are nesting, but missed both. From there we proceeded to Touch the Sky Prairie, a national wildlife refuge just over the border in Minnesota. This is an excellent prairie with lots of quartzite outcroppings, where we found quite a few grassland species like Grasshopper Sparrow, Dickcissel, Sedge Wren, Bobolink, and others. There was a stream running through the area we walked, which formed a small waterfall and some wetland habitat that had Swamp Sparrows and many Common Yellowthroats as well.
After the prairie walk, we stopped and enjoyed some shade for a bit at Palisades State Park back in SD, with some singing woodland species.
Thanks to everyone who attended today. Our next club outing is scheduled for Saturday, August 22. We will be participating/birding at Prairie Fest at Good Earth State Park for at least a little while that morning, but may do a shorebird trip after that, so stay tuned for more details.
