Subject: Neotropic Cormorant -- Wjite County
We stopped by Bald Knob NWR this morning and saw a Cormorant far out in Cell 3. It spooked easily and Michael caught some in-flight shots. We circled back around and saw it again, and as we were attempting to get a clear ID, the crop duster buzzed everything in the first 3 cells, including the Cormorant, which afterwards disappeared.
So we decided to stop by Mingo Creek where we found a single Cormorant. It was bright and sunny with the Cormorant far out in the south pond. We observed the bird for 10-15 minutes and couldn't see any orange above the bill. It was an all dark bird with an all gray bill. The gape/chin patch was yellow and heavily angular. We submitted it as a Neotropic and will add photos to our list later. Just wanted to get the word out.
Daniel Denman just happened to call as we were leaving, and he got there in time to see it before it flew off. However it could come back so if you're in the area, this is a great pond to check for such things.
