The Roseate Spoonbill spent time in the open above Birch Pond this morning. Ir was periodically accompanied by an Anhinga, several Western Cattle Egrets, Little Blue Herons and Great Egrets, all roosting in the trees along the dirt road that circles the pond and area.  Around noon, the Spoonbill flew deeper into the thick, low trees and disappeared.
There are so many waders in the first three cells across from the grainery, it's hard to count them. My estimates were 150 Snowy Egrets, 75+ BLACK-NECKED STILT, and dozens of Little Blue Herons and Great Egrets. The Willets have not been relocated in the last two days but several Lesser Yellowlegs have joined the food fest.
And this report wouldn't be complete without mentioning how fun it was to watch the dozen-plus Mississippi Kites flying/hunting over the fields.

This pond is less than a mile from the low water crossing on Huntsman Rd.  Just take that gravel road south and you'll see the cypress/buttonbush pond on the left...and possibly a Spoonbill at the top of one of the taller trees. This is also where we find Black-crowned Night-herons this time of year.

The Roseate Spoonbill was seen again yesterday, plus a White-faced Ibis and a Willet. All in Cell 2.

There's a single ROSP at the Bald Knob National Wildlife Refuge. It's a different individual than the one from June 22 and appears to be a juvenile. It's currently in Cell 2, which is the second cell west of Coal Chute Rd.
