Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Backyard drama
I found an adult male Common Yellowthroat on the ground beneath a window.
it was clearly in distress from a collision. I put it in a box and in a
quiet place. I checked on it several hours later. It was skittering
about, seemingly in pretty good shape. I took it back outside and put the
box on the ground. It flew out and across the lawn, but weakly. It set
down in the middle of the yard.
A robin flew low across the ground and touched at the warbler. As it flew
off, only then did I see the "robin's" barred tail! A Sharp-shinned Hawk
had been watching the event and made off with a quick snack! A sad ending
for the Yellowthoat, but I have no issue with the hawk doing what hawks do.
