Subject: [sd-birds] Red headed woodpecker nest
So I put up a lot of nest boxes that are about 6 in square and about 10 in
deep on my property in Sanborn County. I mostly use them to trap starlings
but I also am hoping to get great Crested fly catchers to nest in them.
Well I've been seeing red-headed woodpeckers hanging out on the boxes so I
put Aspen shavings in a couple boxes. Well one of them they excavated and I
just opened it up and they have four eggs. Very exciting.

It's interesting because there's a dead cottonwood right next to where they
are nesting and I saw them excavating the cottonwood tree. I don't know why
they didn't nest there unless a starling got them. Anyway. Hopefully
they're successful but we'll see because I have a lot of house wrens and
they may destroy the eggs.
