Date: 6/25/26 5:26 pm From: Bianca Beland via CTBirds <ctbirds...> Subject: [CT Birds] Recruiting for the Barkhamsted Summer Bird Count - June 27th & 28th, 2026
Good Evening!
I'm reaching out on behalf of Dave Rosgen, who compiles the data for the Barkhamsted SBC and CBC. We welcome folks to come up to Barkhamsted, Colebrook, Hartland, Winchester, New Hartford, and anywhere in Torrington north of Route 4 and east of Mountain Road this weekend to help survey for the Barkhamsted SBC!
Dave provided some suggestions for places to bird, I added the major State Forests and Parks in the area (and I've hyperlinked some places to park for each location in addition to trail maps, if available).
"Lower Greenwoods" <https://maps.app.goo.gl/es8DPyEitwLAfwEc6>(Hartford Audubon folks may be familiar with this hotspot) This MDC property is an amazing early successional wildlife habitat managed by DEEP Wildlife but it is not for the faint of heart (mosquitos a plenty and very bumpy gravel road). It's also a very popular fishing stretch of the Farmington River so be aware of vehicles going in and out regularly. You can walk or drive the gravel road all the way down to the end <https://maps.app.goo.gl/26jR2KhJKbM2qrM99>- if you choose to walk down the unimproved path behind the farm gate *THERE WILL BE TICKS* (but also some really great birding!) The gate is to keep off road vehicles out of the habitat.
I guarantee this is not an exhaustive list of places to bird, but Dave and I are only two people and we would love to get more activity to cover more ground this year. Our thanks to anyone on this listserv who has birded the Barkhamsted SBC in the past - we hope to see your names on eBird for the count again this weekend!
Thank you for considering spending some time in our neck of the woods!
