Subject: [CT Birds] Recruiting for the Barkhamsted Summer Bird Count - June 27th & 28th, 2026
Good Evening!

I'm reaching out on behalf of Dave Rosgen, who compiles the data for the
Barkhamsted SBC and CBC. We welcome folks to come up to Barkhamsted,
Colebrook, Hartland, Winchester, New Hartford, and anywhere in Torrington
north of Route 4 and east of Mountain Road this weekend to help survey for
the Barkhamsted SBC!

Dave provided some suggestions for places to bird, I added the major State
Forests and Parks in the area (and I've hyperlinked some places to park for
each location in addition to trail maps, if available).

Farmington River Turnpike North End

Farmington River Turnpike South End

Nepaug Reservoir <https://maps.app.goo.gl/Beyx1bCgL15yu4QFA>(Rt 202
Parking) <https://maps.app.goo.gl/Nt8eo2TEdCtU98ue8> - this parking
location can be busy during the middle of the day, suggested early morning
or late afternoon. There's also parking on the Collinsville end at (Torrington
Ave Parking <https://maps.app.goo.gl/x9bK2QoZySXmdTDH7>)

Nepaug State Forest (Rt 202) <https://maps.app.goo.gl/3XDtZzgwMk5TdrFbA> (Trail

)

American Legion State Forest <https://maps.app.goo.gl/6DR1J1zJ9sdzYcTd8>(Trail

Tunxis State Forest (Hurricane Brook Trail Map Here
<https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/deep/stateparks/maps/backpacking/tunxishurricanebrookpdf.pdf?la=en>)
(there's forest roads near the DOT salt shed on Route 20 but I'm not
confident in the access/parking situation up there) - alternatively there's
the Indian Council Caves <https://maps.app.goo.gl/Qmtu3wd4LwLhpmHq5> stretch
(part of the Tunxis Trail, access down an MDC road,
<https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/deep/stateparks/maps/backpacking/tunxisroaringbrookpdf.pdf?rev=5feac3c93959458fbec9af7c3625993c&hash=8E36CAE7F96D8EEEFE2EB083AB6B7623>
it's depicted
as the gravel road immediately above the legend box. please be respectful,
Tunxis State Forest is on the right side of the road. I'm suggesting folks
park in the little gravel spot immediately north of the Legeyt Road
intersection and cross carefully.)

"Lower Greenwoods" <https://maps.app.goo.gl/es8DPyEitwLAfwEc6>(Hartford
Audubon folks may be familiar with this hotspot) This MDC property is an
amazing early successional wildlife habitat managed by DEEP Wildlife but it
is not for the faint of heart (mosquitos a plenty and very bumpy gravel
road). It's also a very popular fishing stretch of the Farmington River so
be aware of vehicles going in and out regularly. You can walk or drive the
gravel road all the way down to the end
<https://maps.app.goo.gl/26jR2KhJKbM2qrM99>- if you choose to walk down the
unimproved path behind the farm gate *THERE WILL BE TICKS* (but also some
really great birding!) The gate is to keep off road vehicles out of the
habitat.

I guarantee this is not an exhaustive list of places to bird, but Dave and
I are only two people and we would love to get more activity to cover more
ground this year. Our thanks to anyone on this listserv who has birded the
Barkhamsted SBC in the past - we hope to see your names on eBird for the
count again this weekend!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly (as the
Barkhamsted SBC co-compiler).

Thank you for considering spending some time in our neck of the woods!
