"Surround sound" birdsong enveloped us at today's Thursday Birding Meetup at the Dorothy McIlroy Bird Preserve. As sixteen birders hiked through the deep woods, birds were all around us but only some came into view, most fleetingly. We ended up seeing/hearing 27 species, simply appreciating the layered beauty of so many different songs along our path. We were very surprised to clearly and repeatedly hear a white throated sparrow singing its signature "oh Canada, Canada, Canada" song. Perhaps the Adirondack-like cooler microclimate made a comfy summer home instead of migrating literally to Canada? Glimpses of scarlet tanagers and a rose breasted grosbeak were little treats. The wetlands were quieter than we expected but northern waterthrushes, wood ducks and a couple of herons were in view. Otherwise, we enjoyed the hemlock woods, ferns, mushrooms, wood sorrel, a red eft and the gorgeous lily-padded wetlands. The meadow area was alive with song sparrow and common yellowthroat singing, and wildflowers blooming. Twelve of us headed over to MoMo's Cafe for breakfast and conversation. A lovely summer morning! Want to join us next week? Join us on Thursday July 2 at 7:00 am at the Roy Park Preserve North where we'll bird from the new fully accessible boardwalk. Directions from Ithaca: Take Route 13 North toward Dryden. Turn right on Irish Settlement Road. Continue about 4 miles to the North preserve parking lot on your left.
*Special Note:* This listserv does not support sharing of photos and images. That said, here's a link to the Facebook post that includes photos. Each week the Facebook post on the Cayuga Bird Club group page features several photos taken by our Thursday morning birders. Let me know if this link works for you! If so, we'll include it in each week's recap.
