The morning started kind of slow with overcast conditions. Everywhere we looked it seems like we only saw House Finches. Eventually, we observed more species as we made our way through the preserve. We saw five species of swallow (mostly Violet-green and Northern Rough-winged.) Many of these swallows were over the wetlands on the north side. Here, we also saw Song Sparrow and Common Yellowthroat. We heard or saw several Nuttall’s Woodpeckers and one Hairy Woodpecker. We watched an Oak Titmouse for several minutes entering and leaving a cavity nest site. We found both Bullock’s and Hooded Oriole pairs.
On the levee overlooking Guadalupe Creek we saw four Red-shouldered Hawks together calling loudly. At least a couple of these were juveniles. In the creek we heard more Song Sparrow, Common Yellowthroat, and a couple Northern Yellow Warblers. Flyovers included Mallard, Double-crested Cormorant, and California Gull.
