Hi Everyone, Here are several more bird atlas blocks in Los Angeles County that need coverage. Some are within easy reach of the coastal slope but a few are a bit more remote, although all all include sections of paved roads.
Burnt Peak CE
This block is along Lake Hughes Road. It includes the old Cottonwood Campground at the eastern edge, riparian habitat with flowing water, chaparral, side canyons, and some areas that burned in recent fires. In the previous atlas 60 species were coded in this block. This area hasn't received any coverage yet this year.
Crystal Lake SW
This is a block along highway 39 north of Azusa that you drive through on the way to Crystal Lake. It features part of the north fork of the San Gabriel River, chaparral, Upper Bear Creek Trail, and the southern edge of Coldbrook Campground. There's also a long dirt fire road that provides access off the east side of highway 39. During the atlas in the 1990s 51 species were coded here, but so far this time, only 12 have been coded with breeding confirmed for one.
Liebre Mountain NE
This block includes the Pacific Crest Trail on the north slope of Liebre Mountain, part of Pine Canyon Road (which is paved), the summit of Liebre Mountain (traversed by a dirt road), grasslands, open forest with valley oaks, chaparral, and some forested canyons.
San Fernando CW
Only nine species have been coded in this block, two of which have been confirmed. Features include the lower part of Wilson Canyon Trail, residential and industrial areas, chaparral near the LA Aqueduct Cascades, parks, freeway bridges, and open areas around LA Aqueduct facilities. During the Atlas in the 1990s, 76 species were coded here and 47 were confirmed breeding, so there's a lot to see.
Venice CE
This block includes LAX airport. To date, only 8 species have been coded here and breeding has been confirmed for three. Despite the large footprint of the airport, there are several parks, neighborhoods with houses, industrial sites, part of Dockweiler Beach, and a golf course. The previous atlas in the 1990s coded 28 species in this block.
If you can help cover any of these blocks, we'd love to have your help! Regards, Lance Lance BennerPasadena, CA _._,_._,_
