It was overcast, mild, and a little windy, with a touch of rain at the beginning, on the bird survey yesterday. 69 species were found. A couple hundred Cattle Egrets have have started nesting on Pintail Lake with the Anhingas and it looks like some Neotropic Cormorants are thinking about it too. Song birds were really vocal today for some reason. Gallinule broods are present but in lower numbers than usual due to lower water levels in the reservoirs from the Fall/Winter drought we had.. A lot of them are having to build floating nests amidst the lilypads as their usual nesting sites in the emergent cattails along the shorelines are mostly high and dry this year. This makes them more visible to predators. Here is my list for yesterday:
