Hi All,
Visiting birders found a Summer Tanager at the UI Arboretum yesterday AM, and it was subsequently relocated and seen by a number of local birders. It was a first-year male based on its splotchy plumage, but it was still quite striking and greatly enjoyed by all. More information, photos, etc. on the Latah County eBird page here - https://ebird.org/region/US-ID-057. This is only 1 of 2 spring records so far this year in the Pacific Northwest (there are several winter records west of the Cascades where they are somewhat casual winter visitors). Somewhat surprisingly this is the 2nd record for Moscow; the prior record was also on June 11 in 2014 (almost exactly 11 years ago!). It has not been reported so far this morning but I'm not sure if anybody has looked. It was mostly in the lower (southern) third of the UI Arboretum yesterday which is easily accessed from the lower parking lot along Palouse River Drive. It would most easily be detected by short burry song phrases (which Merlin was able to identify) as it was frequently hidden by foliage in Cottonwood and Willow trees.
