This morning as I investigated evidence of breeding by Swainson's Thrushes along the Steep Ravine Trail (Laguna Honda Canyon/paralleling Clarendon) I encountered a singing HOODED WARBLER.
The location is approximately 3-400meters from where David Armstrong discovered a singing Hooded Warbler on 5/6 that was reported by m.ob until 5/25. Given the short distance it seems quite certain that this is the same bird that has moved over to the neighboring breeding atlas block.
I was able to observe the Hooded Warbler for approximately 45 minutes off and on as it ranged over approximately 100 meters of habitat along the trail, singing and at times exhibiting territorial behavior toward Wilson's Warblers and even what appeared to be "mate guarding" one of the Wilson's from the attentions of her conspecifics. This hybrid combo has never been documented (despite their superficial similarity Wilson's and Hooded are in different genera) but stranger things have happened so I encourage others to visit the site and see what they uncover.
While there keep an eye out for any breeding activity by Swainson's Thrushes. These have been present in the Canyon every year from late May through early August since I began making regular visits to the site approximately 10 years ago. They almost surely breed but this species is notoriously skulky in its nesting activities and tough to confirm.
In this area I also briefly heard another warbler song that to my ear closely resembled some versions of American Redstart as well as a vireo song that may have been just a late Western Warbling migrant. However Clarendon which runs parallel to the canyon is a major artery between the Inner Sunset and Cole Valley and by 7 a.m. the noise of traffic was hampering any attempts to locate the singers.
