Sending along some helpful resource links for anyone who is on a mission to
plant native to improve their yard's biodiversity and provide more natural
resources for the food web!
Why Plant Native - Homegrown National Park
<https://homegrownnationalpark.org/why-plant-native/> Many of us have heard Doug Tallamy speak or have read his inspirational
books on the importance of planting native and restoring biodiversity in
our collective back yards to mitigate habitat loss and support native
insects and other wildlife (esp birds :-)! This website provides a lot of
helpful info and links to get us started or further develop our healthy
ecosystems.
Native Plants | Audubon <https://www.audubon.org/native-plants> Enter your zip code to identify native plants suited to your area, planting
requirements, and also see which birds are attracted to that particular
species. You aren't required to enter your email address but you can save
the plants you are interested in and receive the list if you provide your
email address. The website also offers related resource links.
Home - Native Plants Finder <https://nativeplantfinder.nwf.org/> National Wildlife Federation plant database which identifies species based
on your zip code and assigns each species a value based on number of
butterflies and moths hosted.
Browse Plants By County - NYFA: New York Flora Atlas
<https://newyork.plantatlas.usf.edu/browse/county> Includes a database of all plant species found in NY filterable by Native
Y/N with
photos, descriptions, habitat and other information.
NY Protected Natives – Plant Buying Collective
<https://plantbuyingcollective.com/ny-protected-natives/> Rensselaerville, NY (offers shipping)
This works like a co-op pooling orders for lower prices from growers and
proceeds are used to support land conservation and programs. They have
also identified native NY plants that are classified as "at risk" or
protected to help boost populations of those species. Native plant sales
are offered throughout the year, scheduled by planting season. The next
offering is for mid-Summer plugs and opens June 12. They also have a
"Bounty Hunt" program where the documented removal of invasive plants will
be rewarded with replacement native plants. I shopped here for the first
time this Spring with good results using their shipping option, and every
plug/bulb is doing well so far.
Hope this info is helpful to anyone interested in developing their yard's
natural resources and supporting bird populations!
