American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Jun 06, 2026 15:30 by Kelley Boland
- West Hazard Canyon--Montana de Oro SP, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.8812916&<ll...>,-120.8812916 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S353620247 - Comments: "Continuing. Found here: (35.2859831, -120.8845294). In with a large flock of gulls and two BLOY. Immediately spotted the white belly on this oystercatcher. After about 5 minutes, a person walked through and the whole gull/oystercatcher group took off. Some circled and returned (including one BLOY) but, even after walking about 100m farther south, I could not relocate this bird. Photos tba"
American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Jun 06, 2026 07:17 by Ben Kolstad
- West Hazard Canyon--Montana de Oro SP, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.8812916&<ll...>,-120.8812916 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S353423101 - Media: 5 Photos
- Comments: "Continuing bird first reported at this location on 5/25/26 by Allison Webenbauer. Like black but with white below instead of all black.
The white on the body extended around the “shoulder” of the wing.
The call it made was different as well. Maybe a little higher pitched and when two note calls heard they were closer together? It only called a couple times so I might have imagined it. Is BLOY a bit wheezier?
Could it be a hybrid? The eBird species account mentions "Hybrids with Black Oystercatcher occur locally in southern California and Baja; look for messy spotting where the black hood meets the white belly (sometimes very limited but often quite extensive)." I didn't notice it in the field but several of my photos show messy spotting. It is "limited," though, so..."
